About Us

Our Mission: Create an affordable, reliable and clean supply of electricity for New England through balanced and fact-based engagement on energy issues.

AREA is a not-for-profit organization with 100+ diverse members including businesses, trade groups, labor unions, educators, energy suppliers and generators, issues advocates and organizations and individuals. AREA works with its member clients to educate the public, media and public officials through advocacy initiatives to promote local and regional energy policies, and support members’ energy projects including siting, licensing and other regulatory matters. Our initiatives include:

 Media Relations and Communications

Countering negative perceptions and activism with fact-based information by:

  • Proactively placing letters to the editor and Op Ed pieces in local and regional newspapers
  • Leveraging blogs and social media for reactive and proactive outreach on various news and energy and environmental websites
  • Utilizing traditional media relations tactics such as press releases and expert commentary on relevant news topics

Government Relations

Promoting the passage of policies and regulations that support the development of an affordable, reliable and clean supply of electricity by:

  • Providing testimony before regulatory and licensing bodies
  • Conducting outreach (meetings, letters, etc.) to legislators, administration members and local elected and appointed officials

Grassroots outreach

Enlisting member support to speak at hearings, author letters to the editor, call in to radio talk shows and reach out to legislators supporting particular projects, policies, etc.

 AREA also:

  • Hosts business and public energy forums that address key energy issues
  • Writes issue briefs and distributes them to members, the media, and policy-makers.
  • Sends a weekly e-mail of energy related news to members and other interested parties.
  • Leverages union relationships in support of member energy issues.
  • Produces a quarterly e-newsletter sent to a growing list of more than 600 subscribers.
